Sách the Battle for The American Church viết:

To attain the status of membership in the organisation, members must meet two requirements: a postgraduate degree in science and belief in the literal truth of the Bible. Applicants for memberships must sign a statement of belief: that the Bible is the written word of God and that its assertions are historically and scientifically true; that all basic types of living things including man, were made by direct creative acts of God as described in Genesis; and that the Noachian Deluge was a historical event.

There are several Babylonial stories of the Flood which are in some respects remarkable similar to the biblical narrative. This last does not derive from them but draw on the same source, namely on the memory of one or more disastrous floods in the valley of the Euphrates and Tigris which tradition had enlarged to the dimension of a worldwide catastrophe..

The holy Roman Church believes, professes, and preaches that "no one remaining outside the Catholic Church, not just pagans, but also Jews or heretics, schismatics, can become partakers of eternal life; but they will go to the "everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matt. 25:41), unless before the end of his life they are joined to the Church...

(14) Section 8 of Lumen Gentium reads:

This is the sole Church of Christ, which in the creed we profess to be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic, which our Saviour, after his resurrection entrusted to Peter's pastoral care, commissioning him and the other apostles to extend and to rule it.... This Church constituted and organized as a society in the present world; subsists in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the bishops in communion with him. Nevertheless many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside its visible confines. Since these are gifts belonging to the Church of Christ, they are forces impelling toward Catholic unity...

(15) In general, Innocent taught, the Mosaic Law promised temporal and earthy delights, a land flowing with milk and honey, the law of talion, conjugal joy, and a numerous progeny. Against all this, the law of the Gospel extols poverty, invokes a blessing in answer to a curse, venerates virginity - heavy burdens, to be sure, but to those moved by love they seem light. The Old Law was characterized by the active life and by the five senses which make it possible: "such are the carnal Jews, who seek only what sense perceives, who delight in the corporeal senses alone, and this despite the fact that their own prophets "spoke, not carnally, but spiritually."

Edward A. Synan, The Popes and the Jews in the Middle Ages, The MacMillan Company, New York, 1965, p. 88.

(16) Europe dominated by the papacy., knew neither equality nor justice; medieval legislation was as savage in its intentions as in its penalties, and the brunt of these fell upon the helpless Jewish population.

(17) A Jew might complaint, perhaps, that I go too far in baiting him, when I term his understanding "ox-like". But let him read Isaiah, and he will hear what goes farther than "ox-like"! "The ox", he says, "knows his owner, and the ass his master's crib: Isreal has not known Me. My people had no understanding" [Isaiah 1:3]. You see, o Jew, I am milder than your own prophet: I put you on a par with the beast, he puts you beneath them!

(20) An ecclesiastical council at Toulouse outlined a stern procedure for the eradication of heresy in the South. Among other measures, the council forbade the laity the possession of copies of the Bible, except the Psalms and such passages as were in the breviary, and condemned vernacular translation. It thus sought to remove one of the prevalent sources of heresy.

(29) The "Filioque" controversy.

The origin of the Filioque controversy presents one of the unsolved mysteries of Church history. No one has so far discovered when, how and by whom the words "and from the Son" were added to the Creed, the text of which had been solemnly approved both by the East and West as their common confession of faith at the first four Ecumenical Councils. It appears that the addition was made in Spain some time in the sixth or in the seventh century, but the circumstances under which this change occured have so far not been discovered. From Spain the Filioque clause spread gradually to neighbouring Gaul, and from there to England, Germany and Italy. At first, the Roman Pontiffs were opposed to it, and Pope Leo III (795-816) even ordered the original text of the Creed to be inscribed on silver shields and hung in St. Peter's. Charlemagne and his successors, however, were determined to uphold the legetimacy of the addition, for it provided them with the handy weapon against

Byzantinum. In accusing the Eastern Christians of heresy, the Western rulers found a convenient excuse for agression. The refusal of the Orthodox to accept the Spanish addition to the Creed thereby became a pretext for the conquest of territories belonging to the Eastern Empire. Under political pressure Rome withdrew its opposition to the Filioque clause, and in the next century, at the coronation of the Emperor Henry II (1002-1024) in 1014, the Creed was solemnly intoned at St. Peter's complete with the offending addition.

(32) Prayers offered, heads ducked in unison, crossings, chants, christenings, grace at meals, beats, incense, candles, nuns in the classroom alternatively too sweet and too severe, priests garbed black on the street and brilliant at the altar; churches lit and darkened, clothed and stripped to the rhythm of liturgical recurrences; the crib in the winter, purple February and lilies in the spring; confession as intimidation and comfort and so forth.

Bare Ruined Choirs, pp. 15-16.- Msgr. George A. Kelly, The Battle for the American Church, p. 13.

(33) Some years earlier, a non Catholic psychologists, Gordon Alport, had decided that nine tenths of all Church members were "extrinsically religious". This meant they used religion as a security blanket for the way in which they already lived, but harboring more prejudice against blacks or Jews than unbelievers. Such reasoning was picked up by psychologist Eugene Kennedy, whose book In the Spirit in the Flesh applauds the movement of Catholics away from "extrinsic religion" - based on ritual, rules, and dogmas - and to an "intrinsic religion" based on the Gospel's invitation to a life of risk-taking. The pre-Vatican II Church, according to Kennedy, was extrinsic religion, one that sought to impose answers to all questions that the faithful would face, resulting in Catholic conformism. Vatican II, on the other hand offered instead, intrinsic religion, calling believers to search deeper into their own humanity.

(35) As philosophers Modernists are agnostic. They confine reason entirely within the field of phenomena (the appearances of things) and so deny man's natural capacity to know God from reason or revelation. As believers Modernists come to faith in a strange way. Man may not know God by reason. Still religion is a universal human phenomenon. How does this comes about? The explanation must be found within man himself (immanence). God originates in man's need of the divine. As an external being, God is unknowable. Man just believes but that faith has no rational basis.

As theologian, Modernist similarly find revelation in human experience. Revelation is man's consciousness of God. Even the Church must submit to the test of the collective consciousness of men, which evolves and continues to evolve through history. ["Venerable brethen, these are not merely the foolish babblings of unbelievers. There are Catholics, yea, and priests too, who say these things openly; and they boat that they are going to reform the Church by these ravings"].

As historians, Modernists distinguish exegesis that is scientific from that which is theological and pastoral. So as scientifics they "are wont to display a manifold contempt for the Catholic doctrines, for the Holy Fathers, for the ecumenical councils, for the ecclesiastical Magisterium...

Msgr, Gregory A. Kelly, The Battle for the American Church, pp. 43-44

(36) If Jesus Christ is not the Son of God made man, or,

If his basic relevation was not fully given in his short lifespan or

If he founded a Church only in the loose sense of a community of friendly believers, and

If all believers are equal in office before the Father,

If they must search in their own way for the mind and will of God - with the counsel from priests perhaps but without being subject to them.

If institutional structures such as papacy, priesthood, minute laws, or confessionals are considered a human invention, not the divine will.

Then we are dealing with a different understanding of Christianity than that found in the definitions of the Catholic Church. Libro citato, p. 38.
