Tháng 4 năm 2010, hãng BP (British Petroleum) làm tràn dầu trong Vịnh Mexico

Vụ nổ van (valve) trên giếng dầu làm tràn dầu thô từ đáy biển kéo dài 87 ngày và thải ra biển hơn 200 triệu gallons dầu thô.
Việc này làm thiệt mạng 11 công nhân,
gây thương tật cho 17 người khác, và
gây ô nhiễm môi trường cả một vùng Vịnh rộng lớn,
gây tổn hại đến đời sống của ngư dân và của các loại sinh vật trong vùng !

Hơn 8 ngàn sinh vật (cá, chim, rùa biển) chết trong vòng 6 tháng !

BP bị phạt tổng cộng 56 tỉ USD để bồi thường thiệt hại, nộp phạt, và chi trả chi phí dọn sạch môi trường.

Nhân dân Mỹ phản ứng thế nào ?
- trên 30 ngàn người dân góp công dọn sách môi trường, và cứu vớt các sinh vật bị dính dầu thô (hai năm sau vùng biển ấy vẫn còn bị ô nhiễm !)

The Gulf oil spill is recognized as the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Within days of the April 20, 2010 explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 people, underwater cameras revealed the BP pipe was leaking oil and gas on the ocean floor about 42 miles off the coast of Louisiana. By the time the well was capped on July 15, 2010 (87 days later), an estimated 3.19 million barrels of oil had leaked into the Gulf.

2. 16,000 total miles of coastline have been affected, including the coasts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
3. Even though the gushing well was capped in July 2010, oil is still washing up on shores, which might cause long-term damages to people living in the area.
4. The initial oil rig explosion killed 11 people and injured 17 others.
5. President Obama announced that his administration would create a $20 billion spill response fund.
6. Responders used 5.5 million feet of boom, a barrier placed in water, to collect and absorb oil.
7. Of the 400 miles of Louisiana coast, approximately 125 miles have been polluted by the oil spill.
8. A method of treating the oil spill is "in-situ burning" or burning oil in a contained area on the surface of the water, which has negative effects on the environment.
9. Over 8,000 animals (birds, turtles, mammals) were reported dead just 6 months after the spill, including many that were already on the endangered species list.
10. BP is responsible for close to $40 billion in fines, cleanup costs, and settlements as a result of the oil spill in 2010, with an additional $16 billion due to the Clean Water Act.
11. Over 30,000 people responded to the spill in the Gulf Coast working to collect oil, clean up beaches, take care of animals and perform various other duties. As of 2012, the Gulf was still polluted with oil.
